“GARDENS & CAGES” GROUP SHOW CURATED BY JASON MONTINOLA – MAY 2024

“We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” – Anaïs Nin

In the quiet recesses of our minds, there exists a secret garden—a personal, internal space rich with the potential for growth, healing, and transformation. This metaphorical garden, much like the one in Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel “The Secret Garden,” remains hidden, awaiting discovery and care.

Jason Montinola invites us to embark on a journey through the winding paths of these hidden gardens, each meticulously cultivated by a diverse group of artists. Each garden is a unique reflection of its creator, containing fragments of life, memory, experiences, hopes, and dreams. Just as Mary Lennox in Burnett’s story encounters an overgrown and neglected garden that she must nurture back to life, these gardens challenge visitors to pause, explore, and peel back the layers of overgrowth. The goal is to transform each garden into a sanctuary of renewal rather than a prison of despair.

The Dual Nature: Sanctuary or Prison.

The secret garden of our mind holds the potential to be both a sanctuary and a prison. When we tend to it with care, it becomes a place of rejuvenation, where we can retreat to find peace, inspiration, and strength. However, neglecting our mental garden can lead to it becoming overgrown with weeds of negativity, fear, and doubt.

In some cases, our minds can trap us in cycles of rumination, anxiety, and despair. Unresolved issues and unprocessed emotions can create mental prisons that restrict our growth and happiness. Recognizing these patterns and seeking help is essential to breaking free from these self-imposed confines.

Montinola’s curated exhibit underscores this dual nature, inviting visitors to reflect on their own mental landscapes. The exhibit encourages a deeper understanding of the mind’s complexities. It prompts us to consider how we can tend to our inner gardens, transforming them from neglected spaces into vibrant sanctuaries.

Jason Montinola’s Gardens and Cages is an invitation to introspection and personal transformation. Through the lens of art, we are reminded of the power we hold in shaping our inner landscapes, turning them into spaces where we can thrive.
